Difficult Social Situations For People Who Stutter
Which social situations would you say cause you the most difficulty?
I was discussing this subject with a local newspaper reporter this morning. He is currently writing an article about the ways in which I overcame my speech impediment and has been asking various questions about the ways in which stuttering affected my life.
I found speaking on the telephone especially hard, even when I was merely talking to my family and friends. It was even harder when attempting to speak on the phone at my place of work; it was if the rest of my colleagues were listening to me. Call me paranoid if you want but it was just the way in which I felt at the time.
I also struggled to speak fluently when attempting to order items, such as food and drink, from a public bar or restuarant.
Socialising on a night out when I was part of quite a large group also caused me many a problem.
Other difficult social situations included:
Attending a job interview
Speaking to people that I classed as in "power"
Meeting new people
Introducing people
Answering direct questions
I guess these cover quite a few social areas!
