Having The Confidence To Socialise

Socialising was never one of strongest points and I will even admit to fearing it on many occasions. Now to those of you who live for your Friday and Saturday nights this may seem rather bizarre but this was what life was like for me back then.

It became even harder when I was having to socialise with people who I did not know very well. As an example when I was aged twenty-one I was invited to a wedding in Leeds; it was a family member of my girlfriend who was getting married.

My girlfriend asked:

"Would you like to go Steve? That side of my family have stated that they would love to meet you."

Now the truthful answer would be - I could not think of anything worse! I did not want to offend my girlfriend or let her down therefore I responded:

"I would love to go"

As the wedding became ever closer I started to dread the whole event. I just knew that I would have to answer lots and lots of questions - this was something that would usually result in plenty of stuttering on my part.

So as you can see socialising for people who have a stutter or stammer can at times be a real problem hence the reason as to why I was so eager to achieve total fluency.
