Stuttering at the cinema
I was discussing with a client this week about different areas where we used to have major difficulties with our speech. One such area was when ordering items and it reminded me of problems that I would have when going to the cinema. These days it is far easier than what it used to be; you can purchase cinema tickets online or at one of those ticket booths at the cinema.
When I was aged eighteen, fully eighteen years ago, my stutter was probably at its worst. Taking a girlfriend to the cinema should have been something to look forward to however I would always have that constant fear that I could, in fact that I probably would, stutter when ordering the tickets.
So where did this fear come from? Basically it came from the fact that I had previously struggled on many occasions to speak fluently in this and similar speech situations. For the majority of people this was something which was a basic speech task which probably made it even more frustrating for me - yes I was jealous of fluent people.
I wanted to become like these people, fluent. I would become like these people, fluent. I never doubted this despite the negativity of the majority of speech therapists and other so called professionals who were supposed to be there to help and support me.
At the age of twenty-two after having had the stutter for eighteen years I finally managed to stop stuttering and to achieve fluency. That was fourteen years ago and as a career I now help other people to also overcome their stutter.
