Stuttering causes or stuttering therapy?
I have been reading about the subject of the causes of stuttering over the last few days on various blogs. I am all for discovering the different reasons as to why people develop a stutter, but was always far more interested in finding out how to overcome this form of speech impediment, as I could not face having to have a stutter for the rest of my life. I would say that during the period when I had a stutter I spent 5% of my time looking into what caused the stutter and 95% trying to find a cure for stuttering.
I have to say that I have been quite amazed to find that a lot of the people out there who I have been reading about on these blogs seem to spend 98% on stuttering causes and only on 2% on stuttering treatment.
So which is more important to you stuttering causes or stuttering therapy?
The next question has to be this:
Have these people gained any form of fluency by spending 98% of their time concentrating on finding information about the causes of stuttering?
Answer: NO!
I had a lady on the telephone last night asking me whether I could help her with her stutter and about the types of therapy that I offered. Can you imagine how she would respond if I stated that I do not offer stuttering therapy but that I could tell her plenty about the causes of stuttering?
It is a bit like having tennis coaching from someone who can not play tennis or learning French from somebody who can not speak a word of it!
