The Frustration of Stuttering

Will the real Steve Hill please stand up? What do I mean? You may be thinking. Well I will become a politician here by answering the question with a question. This is a question for those of you who have a stammer/stutter: How many of your friends or family know the real you?

As you may have already read I am a person who had a stutter that seemed to come into my life when I was aged four and it remained a negative influence on my life until I overcame it when I was aged twenty-two.  It caused me a great deal of frustration; not just the fact that I was unable to converse fluently but also due to the negative attitude and lack of comprehension on the part of the people who were supposed to be there to help me (speech and language therapists).

What frustrated the most however was the fact that my family and friends were unable to get to the know the real Steve Hill. I just knew that I had so much more to offer; I wanted to tell jokes and to be the life and soul of the party; rather than the person who sat and listened or the person who would rather not socialise.

The stutter was holding me back in such a major way; in my career, in my love life and again in my social life. At the age of 22 I decided to fight back against my stuttering demons - it had to be worth a go as the prize of fluency is absolutely massive.

It took nearly a year and of course a great deal of hard work however in the end I did attain my lifetime goal of achieving total fluency.
