Treatments for children who have a stutter
Hi Steve, I have just read through your website (http://www.stammering-stuttering.co.uk). I have a young child who has a stutter and was wondering how you could help.
Parents contact me on a regular basis asking something similar to the above. These people are eager to find a solution to their child's speech impediment.
The fact that I have had and overcome a stutter gives them renewed belief that help is available.
I am more than happy to offer what ever support they require, this often starts with contact via the telephone or e-mail. Then there is the option of attending a speech course or choosing one of the self-help products such as the DVD or stuttering course notes e-book.
In many cases the child themselves often gains confidence and feels comfortable as they are able to speak to someone who has previously had a stutter.
It is like if you were an alcoholic, would you like to seek help from somebody who has managed to stop drinking alcohol for the last twenty years, or talk to someone who understands what it is like to be an alcoholic but who is still drinking it, or help from someone who has never actually drank alcohol?
Children often find this with the therapy that is available to people who stutter. no wonder they lose all belief in it. They are often taken to a speech therapist in the first instance, a person who in the majority of cases has never had a stutter! They then might attend a stuttering therapy session by somebody who has had a stutter for most of their life but who still has a stutter! This is similar to the examples in the above paragraph.
I do not offer any guarantees, fluency is by no means easy to achieve, we are all different of course. I do however give it my all to help each and every person who seeks my help. I have had a stutter, I am aware just how depressing and difficult it can make one's life, and therefore I fully understand and respect just how important it us to overcome the speech impediment.
