Understanding stuttering and stammering
People often ask me about my experiences at speeech and language therapy during the period when I had a stutter. As people, the majority of the speech therapists were very nice - they were educated and for the most part they tried their best to help me.
I suppose one of the main problems for me was the fact that I was more than eager to achieve total fluency and this was something that the therapists were unable to provide. This left me feeling frustrated and even angry.
I would talk to the speech and language therapists about the voices/demons in my head which would attempt to convince me that I could not say a certain word or speak in a certain situation. They would in turn look at me as if I was some sort of freak - I could tell that they believed that I needed additional forms of therapy to what they were offering - the "nuthouse" maybe.
So what percentage of their speech and language course at college or university was spent learning how to help people who had a stammer or stutter? I have heard that it is often as little as 5%!
I soon became aware that what I needed was a more specialised stuttering treatment but eventually went about finding my own solution for stuttering.
That was fourteen years ago and I have been able to speak fluently ever since.
